“Somnium Obmutum” is a doom metal album released by the band Estatic Fear, and overall leans more towards the softer side of metal, even for a doom metal band, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to create great music. This album is made up of four songs, each with varying lengths:
The first track, Des Nachten Suss’ Gedone, is just under two minutes in length, serves as an introductory track, and consists of a lute playing. This is a well done intro track, for the music itself and for the type of music the listener can expect throughout the rest of the album.
The second track, Somnium Obmutum, is the longest track on the album at over 32 minutes, which takes up over half of the total album length (just under 57 minutes). This song is definitely worth the time it takes, as it uses varying speeds throughout, from heavier (but still atmospheric) parts which will satisfy the metal lover in you, to the softer passages which will satisfy those who enjoy atmospheric music. The band has done a great job in mixing the two different paces throughout the song to keep it varied, interesting, and memorable.
The third track, As Autumn Calls, is over four minutes long and can be considered to be a breather track between the last track and the next track, which make up the vast majority of the album. As for the track itself, it mostly consists of keyboard parts played around samples of rain, thunder and wind, which they’ve managed to turn into a very nice interlude track.
The fourth track, Ode To Solitude, is an 18 and a half minute song which basically uses the same structure that the Somnium Obmutum track is derived from, but overall is possibly a bit more heavier than the previously mentioned track, but doesn’t sacrifice any atmosphere to make it so. If you liked the Somnium Obmutum song you’ll like this one as well.
Overall this is a very good doom metal album, with lots of melodic, symphonic and atmospheric elements mixed throughout. This album is recommended for anyone who likes slower, more atmospheric metal, and would also be a good CD to play for someone you want to give a basic introduction to the world of doom metal.
