Pretty nice album!

With Reconquering the Pit, German Lay Down Rotten have made a record that mixes dark death metal with melodeath sometimes close to the Gothenburg sound and style. Most of the songs actually have it. One could fear this would mean they all would sound the same making Reconquering the Pit quickly repetitive. This is not the case and it’s best illustrated in “Bitter Thoughts” and “New Mechanic Human Phenomena”, the latter being my favourite song on the album. There we have some excellent part-melodic riffs and leads, twisting in and out of the uncompromising heaviness.
The sound isn’t very complex, but it gives room to each instrument in the mostly standard death metal sound. I could have wished for a little more ‘punch’ especially the drums are almost anonymous, but that might just be me. Reconquering the Pit is an album that will grow the more you listen to it and both death metal and melodeath fans will find plenty of good things here. A great album!
