It's all part of the Mayhem/Burzum craziness that was going on back in the early 90s that eventually landed Varg in prison. This particular cover was a picture taken by Mayhem frontman Euronymous, its a suicide pic of the vocalist Dead. The pic was allegedly never supposed to get out, obviously did, and became what is probably the most infamous/famous death metal cover ever. As you probably know Euronymous was then killed a short time later by Varg (Burzum), the story is intertwined with some church burnings and other craziness. I put this cover up not as a favorite, but as what I believe is the most infamous cover ever. Sorry if it offended anyone, but IMO it is a very important piece of Death Metal history. Stuff like this cover are what added to the mystique of the genre, which unfortunately ultimately led to way too many cheap imitations of the bands that laid the foundation for western European metal.

@cjjeepercreeper: Varg was never involved with the church burnings, he even criticized them. Besides of that, Euronymus wanted to kill Varg, Euronymus was jealous at Varg.
the night Varg killed Euronymus his first intention was just to break every link with him and Euronymus: there was still one contract that had to be handled between them. And because Varg had suspicions about Euronymus his murder plans, he just asked it right away, right in the face. Euronymus kicked him and ran to the kitchen (there was a big kitchen knife laying on the table) Varg had seen the knife, pulled a little knife (I think it was a briefopener) and stabbed Euronymous in the shoulder.
Euronymous started running away (into the stairs-hall) and Varg ran after him, he was "blind of pure fury/rage" and stabbed Euronymous a few more times in the shoulder (but with low damage cause they were both running). He stopped when Euronymous fell. Then Euronymous stood up and kicked him again, after which Varg stabbed the little knife right into Euronymous his skull (=> causing dead by being brain-crushed). Euronymous died and fell down the stairs into glass (=> that way the murder looked even worse, cause of all the glass-cuts)

the police also charged him for the church burnings (that way they could show Norway they had found the responsible one for the burnings, Varg was the so-called black sheep)

the biggest reason causing a very bad relationship between Euronymous and Varg had something to do with the shop they used to run together and with the bad managing skills (on purpose?) of Euronymous.

I'm just giving the other side of the Euronymous-Varg story, cause most people just know the story as "good saint Euronymous" and "monster Varg" but as you all know: in almost every story like this, there is no good one and no bad one...

Zarquin, I've spent hours reading Varg's stuff he's written while in prison, I'm well aware of his side of the story. The version you tell is exactly what he said in a LOT more words on the Burzum website, its an extremely interesting read, I'd recommend anyone at all interested in the history of metal read his stuff.

And BTW, I do believe if you sift thru it all he does admit to some complicity in the church burnings, BUT, and this is a very big but, it was not because he was a satanist, because he wasn't. He was, and is, a Pagan (his reasons for not being a satanist actually are quite logical and make a great deal of sense), so his and others motives in the burnings were not satanist, which is just the flip side of christianity.

Like it was said, there are numerous versions of all this stuff, in fact there is a documentary movie supposed to come out this year about it. Point being, though, like I said, the long and convoluted history of metal just wouldn't be the same without this strange stuff from the early 90s.

BTW, as a side note, I do NOT recommend sitting down and listening to all the Burzum albums one after another. LOL I did this just the other day and wasn't the same for about a day and a half, I was out of synch and weirdly irritable. Strange stuff, I do think Varg at least partially accomplished his purpose, that is sort of a spell on the listener, if you believe what he says. Snicker

He claims not to be, but, that really isn't relevant to what happened 14 years ago, IMO. BTW, doesn't he get out this year?
