I'm sure I'm not the only person to compare Tyrants and Men to the popular Swedish band Amon Amarth, for in both its lyrical content and riffing construction, this Alaskan debut is quite similar. Not on a note for note basis, perhaps, and some credit could be granted here for some glorious patterns of composition which feel memorable and expertly layered, but Thousand Year War comes off like a blend of Twilight of the Thunder God and With Oden On Our Side with a bit of run-off from other melodic death metal giants Insomnium and Dark Tranquillity. The vocals are a bit more snarled than those of Johan Hegg, but the punch of the guitars is uncannily familiar. That said, if you enjoy this act's influences to a great extent, then there is no real reason to pass on what is regardless a strong debut.
The production here is enormously professional and clear, and it really only takes getting through a humdrum opening track ("Defiance") before you get to the juicy bits. "The Sea" is one of the strongest pieces here, building some finely twined melodic guitars into a steady, uprising gallop beneath the abusive vocals, and pay specific attention to the majesty of the bridge sequence. The next pair of cuts ("No Gods, No Masters" and the namesake "Thousand Year War") are pretty straight shots of Twilight of the Thunder God-like material with a storming subtext of double bass and meaty tremolo riffing; but I found that apart from "The Sea", most of the strongest songwriting comes in at the end with the brief but epic "One Final Breath", the belligerent "Spartacus" and the taut and mighty title track finale. In fact, just about all the nine originals are worth the while with the exception of "Defiance". It just doesn't possess the same caliber of hooks...
As an added surprise, Hiram Lohr has included a cover of I's "The Storm I Ride" from their 2006 debut Between Two Worlds. Obviously this is a crisper, punchier translation with more of a percussive edge to it, and I didn't find the vocals to hold quite the same character as those used by Abbath, but it's a tight job, even if it feels a little 'too soon' after the original. In general, the musicianship here is fairly top notch for the sub-genre, with Swedish drummer Fredrik Widigs (The Ugly, Soils of Fate) contributing a concrete battery comparable to those of a fellow Fredrik (Andersson). As I mentioned above, Tyrants and Men sounds fabulous for this style, the young band deciding to go 'big' and not go home, blazing loudly from whichever speaker applies. Lohr knows when the hammer, and when to slice. The lyrics are admittedly pretty generic in the ambiguous pagan aesthetic, with lots of storms and fire and thunder and trampling of Christians (Amon Amarth, Immortal, and I are all reference points), but overall it's a good listen, even if it feels that we've ridden these particular waves and waters before.

There seems to be no shortage of younger bands out there infusing the vintage realms of speed, thrash and heavy metal with a more aggressive, 'current' black metal edge in the vocals and atmosphere. Thankfully, they tend to draw upon such a wide palette of influences that very few feel quite the same. For example, Midnight feels little like Kvelertak; Speedwolf little like Gravehill, and yet they all seem bound for a similar audience. Enter Indiana's Maax, who wear all this 'black & roll' on their sleeves, with logo and album artwork that would literally make for an eye catching tattoo, and offering a blend of similar aesthetics to those you'd find in the aforementioned acts. I wasn't quite so taken with the previous release I had heard (their Six Pack Witchcraft EP last year), but persistence has clearly paid off.
I might not be singing or remembering Unholy Rock & Roll a few months hence, but at least it is fun while it lasts, and there are at least 2-3 genuinely good tunes that make up for any of the filler. As hinted, there are a wide array of influences on the album, from the filthier side of the NWOBHM spectrum (Venom and Motörhead) to the formative Teutonic black/thrash of Sodom, Kreator and Destruction; with a healthy helping of Kill 'Em All or Celtic Frost. This manifests in a good deal of variation between individual songs, so you'll have something like "Fight With Fire" which feels like a mix of old Metallica and Kreator's "Riot of Violence"; or "Do What Thou Wilt" which incorporates a smudge of straight old Judas Priest trad metal with the blacker, barking vocals; or the band's namesake "Maax" which is pretty much barroom punk metal bred for broken glass and morning after regrets. Curiously enough, my favorite track here was "Overthrone", which is a mix of driving, tremolo black metal with these ominous, churning death metal breaks.
The point is: with Maax, you've got options. Perhaps none of the constituent sounds going into this record are so pronounced or volatile as you'd find them in other places, but they tend to handle everything well enough in this mixed punchbowl of punishment. Almost as if someone hurled a bunch of vintage metal tees and denim jackets into a cauldron, added a whole lotta whiskey and absinthe and then stirred the shit out of it and handed you the ladle. I enjoyed the deep, dark fuzz of the guitar tone and the bruised bluntness of the vocals, and in general the riffs hang with the ear, even if they don't really fashion into the most striking of patterns. But it's not as if the band set out to write Powerslave or Det Som Engang Var. This isn't 'deep'. No, this is meant to kick in the ribs of the opposition, spit or urinate on its victims and then hit the road in a high speed motorcycle escape from the local authorities. To that extent, there's nothing wrong with it. Unholy Rock & Roll, just as was advertised.

Angrepp unleash their debut, 'Warfare' upon the masses like a hailstorm of bullets. The album is vicious but also catchy, making an interesting blend of thash, black, and even hints of death metal. They don't do anything revolutionary but they also try to stay away from the usual run-of-the-mill formula that other bands use, such as the 'repetitive chug' format. Instead, Angrepp open 'Warfare' with a brief introduction that suits the album very well: rolling tanks and a melodramatic background before jumping into "Five Horned Formation." Angrepp tend to sound more black metal on the guitars than thrashy, lending their musical style to the seamless tremelo pickings combined with blast beats while incorporating subtle catchy chugs here and there. The only thing that is really remotely thrash is the solos, which are preformed with enegry and great timing. The vocals too are not the usual black metal rasp; instead they sound like a death metal growl almost with just a tinge of shrieking, which certainly grabs the listener's attention and drives the music as a whole.
As far as music formation, the album tends to stay the same as Angrepp feels their formula works pretty well for them and they don't need to go too far into experimental territory. "Dead and Destroyed" feature a great catchy intersection where the guitars chug along to highs and lows and offer a more thrash base rather than the streaming black metal one heard on "Legions Arise." "Fiende" is a very aggressive track that opens like death metal and the drums are relentless until there's that long, distorted effect of the chords near the end to calm things down before they start blasting again. But, it would have to be "Rape, Kill, Rock n' Roll" that takes the cake on the album. Like its namesake, this track takes on a more rock based style, but what really makes it fun is the militaristic drum style the band keeps throughout the track. It suits the album perfectly!
Overall, Angrepp don't delve too much into the groove side of things, but fans of bands like Devian and Dead To This World will probably enjoy this very much. It's heavy and violent, but not so much it obliterates a listener like some of Vader's tracks would. Instead, 'Warfare' slowly lures the listener in track by track until they're hooked and then blasts them apart with the last few tracks, which tend to stay on the heavier side compared to the earlier ones. There is no mercy when it comes to a song like "Dictator." But, one also may notice that the rock bits from "Rape..." are stuck like fragments in them as well.

The gardnerz seems to be a South American band actually, two of is members being from Chile, one from Mexico and only one from Sweden, but I guess they have relocated to Sweden. The Mexican guy namely Wilhelm Lindh was (is?) also a member of the Death Metal legends Toxodeth, everyone should know who Toxodeth is. "The System of Nature" is The Gardnerz' debut album, a 12 tracks effort lasting for exactly an hour, a melodic, heavy and dark Doom Death Metal a la' '90's that honestly made me think of early Amorphis, and that's because of the "oriental" approach on guitar leads. The guitar riffs unfortunately are getting too repetitive at times and that gets monotonous, and if you add the mono-tone raspy vocals of Niclas (good vocals, but not varied enough) this drags down the release, but still all in all I have enjoyed it, especially the guitar leads and bass lines. Recommended to old Amorphis followers. The Progressive Death Metal elements that are thrown in here and there only show that these guys have a lot more potential than they show on this release.

FAUST (Italy) From Glory to Infinity DIGI CD review by www.teethofthedivine.com

Italy’s Faust brought in the big dogs for the recording of From Glory to Infinity. Luckily, the musical aspects of said disc far exceed the visual ones (i.e. the cartoon cover of the amply bosomed nun). Feast your eyes on this lineup and you will understand why the musicianship on the album is top notch: Vocalist/guitarist Aleister (Ancient), bassist Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Autopsy, Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, etc.), drummer Darek “Daray” Brzozowski (Dimmu Borgir, Vader, Vesania), guitarist Luca Princiotta (Doro, Blaze Bayley, Clairvoyants), and guitarist Ghiulz (Profantum, Obscurity). Not too shabby, eh?
So you figured it is a good bet that the playing on From Glory to Infinity does not suck. You figured right. But what about the songwriting? It is better than average and if one views this more as a series of melodic death metal instrumentals that just happen to include growls with indistinct patterns then you are less apt to be disappointed. That probably sounds worse than it was meant. The point is that these compositions are rife with soaring melodic leads, triumphant galloping rhythms that at times border on trad-metal, the sinewy bass lines of DiGiorgio, and beautiful sections of acoustic layers underneath breathtaking leads. Being so smitten with the instrumentation makes the vocals seem like an afterthought, which is not so much a criticism of the throat-work (it is like a mid-range, throatier Luc Lemay), as a recognition of the compositional acumen involved. “Wet Veils” and the aptly titled “Carnal Beatitude” are two shining examples. The main melody of “Golden Wine Countess” is noteworthy as well. It is worth mentioning again that DiGiorgio’s playing throughout is fantastic.
In fact, each cut is a dazzling display of brilliant musicianship and melodic sensibility. Even with those high compliments, the album becomes marginally redundant after a while and not quite as memorable as it could be. These are minor criticism though, as From Glory to Infinity is a fine work that does not sound quite like anything else out there right now, the occasional (vague) nods to melodic tech-death acts like Gorod and Anata notwithstanding. Definitely worth checking out.

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Thousand Year War,and how long the band has been together.
I’m Hiram Lohr – Guitarist, Vocals, Songwriter, and lyrics in TYW. Started out in winter of 2008….. working on a demo with Cult black metal bassist Old Goat from Juneau, Alaska. Later I was joined by former TYW member Kellen on Guitar/Bass and session drummer Mortaeus (AX) for our demo, and session drummer Fredrik Widigs (Ex-Angrepp, Live Witchery/Demonical) Kellen (Guitar/Bass) and me on guitar/vocals. Now for the EP “Vulture Eyes” its me-Vocals, Fredrik-Drums, and Pablo Magallanes-Guitars, Bass (Live Guitarist) -Demonical, Internment)
What is the metal scene like in Anchorage, Alaska and are there very many place to play?
I’m moving out of the state in under two weeks as we speak.I honestly can’t say I’ve been a real part of the Anchorage metal scene. Most of the time I lived there we were just working on songs that would become our full length and concentrating on finding a label…..we were never able to find a drummer in that town so getting out live there was impossible. Although I think there are a few good venues there now. It seems like currently they have a pretty solid following of more mainstream metal, deathcore, and trendier elements of the new wave of metal. Not my cup of tea. When I moved to Alaska I always envisioned some kind of great underground black metal and death metal movement that was more inspired by the grand nature and elements of the north…. but there is actually more of a movement to the American metal movement than the great Scandinavian and European scenes that are incredible and full of heart and soul.
Any local metal bands from your area you could recommend?

One that comes to mind is Siege Engine….. more old school doom… the guy Brett Manes has been behind this band for I think over 20 years and that is really impressive to me. Bound By Entrails were one of the only performing Black Metal bands in Alaska and they are unfortunately gone… but are releasing a final opus. I think for some reason people think of 36 crazy fists when mentioning metal in Alaska. Not really sure why. Dont get me wrong, talented guys, but post hardcore is hardly metal. Turbid North are really good but they left…. and also Pariah who lived close to where I am now are great… but also gone. I kind of gave up following Alaska bands … just seems uninspired.
How did you wind up being signed to Abyss Records?
Mainly through the recommendation of TYW’s session drummer Fredrik Widigs. He was playing for a couple other bands on Abyss and so we submitted our recording of Tyrants and Men and were offered to sign. Dan Ferguson is an incredibly hard working guy and has been involved in the metal scene for many years now. Great things are coming and going to come from Abyss!!!
Is there any story or concept to the CD title Tyrants and Men?
Yea. To me the world is encompassed by Tyrants who are the elite world wide ruling leaders. These people are George Bush and his father, Obama, high ranking illuminati, high ranking police officers, overseers of Nasa…. I could go on and on and on….
The ruling evil elite. Men (that includes women) are the opposition and lovers of truth, not power and wealth. This encompasses all my lyrical content for TYW on the CD Tyrants and Men. A look at the duality between these two orders in conflict and constantly battling to turn the world we live in around.
How will your forthcoming EP Vulture Eyes compare to what’s heard on Tyrants And Men ?
Well, the riffs are more complicated and evolved into their own from Tyrants and Men. In Tyrants and Men there were a lot of musical and band influences that at times are dominating and at other times not. This is common when bands start out and find their place in their music. But Vulture Eyes can just be Thousand Year War and the influences very subtle. Everyone has influences. The songs are really hard hitting and rocking with riffs that really stand out and get in your head.
Select any two Thousand Year War songs and what inspired the lyrics?
Open Casket-
In this song I am trying to convey the message that a good majority of the world are asleep. And I mean that the common man and woman are living subjugated to a totalitarian reign of evil from the ruling elite and drowning in all the technology, food, products, politics, and religion that are taking away from higher thinking and lowering our intelligence and moral well being as humans to a level that is unhealthy.
One part in Open Casket especially comes to mind in the chorus:
Is there, a reason? Why they live so dead inside? no stars remain in the soulless sky….. a burning flame within their minds, scorches the thoughts of human kind!
If you think about it and really analyze it….. you will realize there is a reason why people are living soulless and uninspired. The answer is out there, but its not in the schools, government, fucked up society, or bland religion. The passion in your heart, and rebellion in your mind is what fuels the flames and makes us so fascinating and incredible as human beings
Thousand Year War-
I wrote the lyrics for this after being absorbed into what was basically a holy war… or unholy war that was being waged by evil crusaders like George Bush and his father. And Like the crusaders a thousand years before them….they only had evil on their minds and hearts full of hatred and greed. Where one was obtaining documents and slaughtering innocents, another was obtaining oil and slaughtering innocents. The comparison is uncanny. The hundred year war continuing on a thousand years later. Very sad and all under the guise of Christianity which is just a branch off of paganism.
Who did the fantastic artwork for Tyrants And Men and how much input did you have on it?
Gragoth of Luciferium War Graphics is the man behind that cover. Thank you… its excellent!
I always am a big part in the creation of TYW as far as artwork is concerned. To me the Artwork is a huge part of metal….. I love it. I am one of those douchebags that buys cd’s based on the artwork… hahah
When I sit down I constantly have ideas and visions of how the artwork should be and work very closely with the artist and communicate that vision to them in detailed description. I think the art should always mean something. Currently I am working with Michelle Frusco for the cover of “Vulture Eyes“. She is an amazing up and coming artist that I’m sure will gain recognition as a great creator. The cover is very inspired dynamic. Fans should appreciate it.
What made you decide to cover London Dungeon by the Misfits and do you know if they’ve heard it yet?
I love the Misfits! Been wanting to do a Misfits cover forever and London Dungeon leaped out at me. They have not heard it…. probably never will… who knows though!
What could one expect from a live Thousand Year War show?
I am currently trying to organize a mini-US tour 2-3 months down the road…..so far I haven’t been able to take TYW live but am trying to find the right booking agency, session musicians in California, and get us out there on the road and live. What to expect? Expect to get off your ass, circle pit, bang your head, and scream your fucking lungs out. I don’t believe in thumb up your ass bullshit metal/punk shows. Why come see a band live if you don’t want to unleash energy? If I have to drink myself into shambles and charge the audience to get everybody excited and moving… fuck it… I will… just make sure to pick up my blood soaked body and buy me a drink in the end!
Have you ever played in the Los Angeles area or plan to do so in the future?
Nope…. but yes I do plan to in the future. In this tour idea I would love to spend at least two days in the LA area playing!! Seems like there is a huge true metal fan base in Southern California!
Can you see Russia from your house? (Sarah Palin reference of course)
hahahah! Fuck no…… although the town I live in has a Russian Village and a couple others close by…..does seeing a Russian Village from my house count? For the record Sarah Palin is a wolf killing piece of human shit. And fuck people that kill magnificent predators like wolves….. Can someone please grind her up into blood meal??? wait….that is too dignifying. Throw her remains in a curry house sewer tank!

Question everything and always seek truth before all!! If you are listening to leaders in power…. remember to think of the opposite of what they are saying and their message can serve as a warning. Lets rise up together and smash their fucking system!!!

The Swedish old school reopens!
Six years after their formation, Entrench published under ABYSS RECORDS their first full-length from the prophetic title "Inevitable Decay". Already the first track "As Dawn Breaks" one senses the direction taken by the band, with a choice of style that recalls the early Kreator: primordial sounds that catapult us to the dawn of Thrash.
The third track "Portrait Of A Phobia" is subtly inspired flashes to "Golem" of the Protector, flagship of the group stage 80 Thrash / Death. "Into Oblivion" with its frenetic riffing stopped and the "Blind Illusion" give us the same cd in different eras, where sound more modern blend the Old School. "Crossing The River", entirely instrumental approaches to the blast megadethiane tight stairs with a good result. As we closed, "Where Only Ruins Remains" with a slow riffing and powerful at first, culminating with a perfectly executed solos.
The ability of these kids is truly astounding Swedes from composition to execution, but little originality of the themes (life, death and war) and the repetitive structure of the tracks can penalize them in the long run.
"Inevitable Decay" is still a more than full-length as well in only 8 pieces retraces the history of Thrash Metal.
