MAAX (U.S.) Dawnbringer CD review by Phuling
By Phuling
I didn’t realize until after I’d reviewed Maax’s EP Six pack witchcraft that I also had Dawnbringer to review; their debut album released a year before the EP. Eventhough I had looked through the entire pile of promos from Abyss Records I never made the connection between the two records, and I suppose it’s due to the fact that the logos on the two releases look so completely different. So after hearing the EP first I expected this to sound similar, and I couldn’t have been more wrong.
This is melodic, sleek and slick, sans the intrusive burliness of Six pack witchcraft. As soon as Blut reich…blood dawn begins I get a strong Lord Belial vibe, with very reminiscent riffing, melody and even vocals. As the similarities to said band dissipates over time, the black metal doesn’t. I’m not sure I’d guessed the band to hail from the States if I hadn’t known, simply ‘cause it sounds fairly European in style. Melodic riffing, not driven by leads but by a core of melodic riffs, going by both like a hurricane and like a slowly driven bulldozer. They’re mainly focusing on slower paces, rarely indulging themselves in blasting. It comes across as quite raw yet melodic, old school Norwegian yet 90ies European, and with a drizzle of modern American black. When they pick up speed, such as in the title track, the aggressiveness of their music is really terrific, whereas the slower tunes have a more chilling and eerie atmosphere, drenched in darkness.
I’m extremely surprised this is even the same band, although there are a few moments where the thrash influences shine through, the rock stays far away from their sound. Dawnbringer’s a damn evil-sounding album with a marvelous atmosphere, blending almost every style of black metal together very well. It’s far from anything unique, but it’s nonetheless bloody satisfying for a black metal freak.

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD review by pestwebzine
By Adrian
Diabolical are back after 3 years since the release of their third studio album, although this new CD seems to be only one intended to let the people know they are still alive. "Ars Vitae" is composed of 4 new tracks, 9 live ones and as bonus, their debut EP from 2000, Deserts of Desolation, so you can't call it a real live album either, it's more of a compilation of 70 minutes of Black Death Metal made by Diabolical. The 4 new tracks sound very good, dark, epic and catchy, so I'm sure their fans won't be disapointed. The live part has a very polished, studio-touched sound so if it wasn't for the public screaming at the beginnings and endings of the songs I wouldn't have said this is a live recording. The 2000 EP is remastered, but it still has that raw feeling and the music is slightly different, more inclined onto a technical Thrash Death Metal rather than the Black Death they are playing now. A good release for their fans, I can't see anything wrong with it.

FESTER (Norway) A Celebration of Death CD review by www.queensofsteel.com
By Tania Gimenez
After 17 years since they drew their last album, "Silence," Fester Norwegians are back, and hopefully to stay. This forgotten gem in the early 90's the Norwegian extreme underground is back with new album, new label and new training except for Tiger Mathisen (who last played in 2011 the first album by his band SINCERA, but before This round we had not had any news of him).
Fester continue mixing elements of different styles of extreme metal as Thrash, Black, Death and even Doom, and also add to the mix a little heavy and even Jazz. Do not leave out the rhythm changes from a battery varied and natural, although at times dowry to the issues of certain industrial roundwood. The low weight gives that highlighted both in this work (as in the old days) and merges seamlessly with the guitar riffs. The truth is that Jon Bakker (Kampfar) shows keep up the deceased Jørgen Skjolden. In its first two rounds the guitar was the best they had, so I wondered if that practically glowing hallmark continue along this round, and amply demonstrates not having lost any strength and / or quality giving us a barrage of riffs and a great versatility that takes inspiration from different musical styles to adapt themselves to the compositions of the combo. Now they also have subtle synthesizers, and the truth is that they make the atmosphere even more dark and terrifying. The truth is they are a great addition to the combo, a fully steely incorporation (especially in the right measure in which they have used, and how they have). How could it be otherwise, the voices are still as features, with regular records (screams) of black metal in combination with some grunts. Undoubtedly, a good contrast the voice and tone usual with death metalhead base of the Norwegian training.
Moreover, the production does justice to an audio disc and composition of the old school. It is a production and sound dirty and rough, it seems that this aspect has not spent the time. Simply, do you need an album like this. A live album, heavier and less experimental than previous ones.
Disc spotless return of this cult band: Fester. Impeccable back very hard to live up to its past, and cuts like "Rites of Ceres" make it very clear (what a great way to open this book, by the way).

ANGREPP (Sweden) Warfare DIGI CD review by www.extreminal.com
By Cenk A.
Swedish band Angrepp can be regarded as a brand new one. Since 2010, there seems to be no record of them after a demo release in 2006. This promo that we received was sent by Abyss Records in digital format. The genre of the band is thrash metal, but it is possible to come acroos black metal that contains Swedish melodic theme.
After the intro, the stereotypical beginning riffs of black/thrash/punk n roll which are rising nowadays welcome us. Hmm, was it a bad description? Don’t take it like that, Angrepp starts their album by whipping you on your backs. I, listening to Warfare very carefully, feels the grim fire of black metal that lies under the aggressive thrash frame like in Estonian group Must Missa which I like very much. But, for me, this album is mostly a thrash one.
The cover of the album is well matched with the concept, a soldier, a tank and bloody people on the background, in fact this can be regarded as a good cover which mixes “death” and “brutality” well but I find it cliché. Besides lame rhythms, acute guitars and powerful drums, with the dirty vocal that is hiding behind these, Angrepp is a group that both contains thrash metal’s technique, black metal’s aggressiveness and Swedish metal’s mobility, you shouldn’t overlook them. "Five Horned Formation", "Warfare", "Rape, Kill, Rock'n Roll" and "Dictator" are really very good songs.
Generally, the album is successful and satisfactory. The ones who listen to thrash metal might not like it, but the ones who listen to black metal and have begun to listen thrash metal recently will definitely love it.

FESTER (Norway) A Celebration of Death CD review by bringerofdeathzine
By OCCULTBLACKMETAL
Fester are a band from Norway that has had a couple of their albums as well as being interviewed by this zine with a musical style that combines black, doom, and death metal together and this is a review of their 2012 reunion album "A Celebration Of Death" which was released by Abyss Records.
Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with not much in the way of fast playing or blast beats and on the last song they have an industrial feeling to them, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars, as for the synths which only utilized briefly they sound very dark and have the feeling of a horror film soundtrack.
Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced riffs that combine black, doom and death metal together with some dark sounding melodies as well as a small amount of thrash riffing as well as some industrial on the remix while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding black/death metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only utilized briefly they use finger picking to enhance the darkness of the music.
Vocals are mostly pitched black metal screams with some deep death metal growls being used at times, while the lyrics cover dark and occult themes with one song being written in Norwegian, as for the production it has a very powerful, dark and heavy sound to it.
In my opinion this is a great comeback album from Fester that is alot more heavier and less experimental than their last recording, and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Rites Of Ceres" "The Black Tower" "I'll Hunt You Down" and "A Face For A Funeral". RECOMMENDED BUY.

BANE (Serbia) Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by www.queensofsteel.com
By Sergio Fernández
The album was recorded at Studio Hellsound of the Czech Republic at a time that has been produced, mixed and mastered by Honza Hapak, which is probably unknown to the public but has played in bands like Judas Iscariot, Krieg or NARGAROTH among others, that is, not a beginner in the scene black metalheads. In addition, the artwork has been created by the great Marcel Basque (Belphegor, Obituary, Vader, Satyricon, etc.). That said, it is clear that Bane has surrounded himself with people who know this for a while.
Entering into the round itself, the first thing to say is that the nine songs that comprise it, are dividades "3 chapters": the first called "Chaos", the second "Darkness" and the third "Emptiness".
"Chaos" begins with an introduction that anticipates a powerful atmosphere, immediately followed by a powerful hit and a raging guitar. The environment has created an intense BANE variety of rhythms, faster passages and other slower combinandos guttural screaming and making the listener create the chaos that so well defines this chapter.
In "Darkness", the quiet melody takes over the sound although there are themes with influences from sugarcane old school Death Metal. In general, everything is different, and when I mean everything, I mean those rhythms guitarists at that tempo and composition of the actual songs themselves.
The last chapter named "Emptiness", is a pure sample of Doomi rhythms. The slower parts are dominant melodic and gentle intermingling phases within the aggressive parts of the issues. The vacuum is what the listener feels only hear these issues, where the heavy guitars and dark grunts prevail. The album ends with an instrumental song that completely immerses the listener in a sea of dark, empty and dark sound.
In short, deeply recommend this work as well as being original, you can enjoy very good musicians who give their best to create a CD in which the influences are as varied as BANE able to capture in the three parts that have divided this great "Chaos, Darkness and Emptiness".

MAAX (U.S.) Six Pack Witchcraft DIGI CD EP review by www.metalcrypt.com
By metalcrypt
Now that's the stuff. Upon first listen, this reminded me a bit of Chrome Division, but darker, heavier, faster and definitely less shiny. Really the comparisons stop at the very garage-style rock 'n' roll vibe, for Maax is really more of a blackened heavy/thrash affair with an old school vibe. And they're not into pretty wankering either: This is fast-paced metal with an all-hell-breaks-loose, take-no-prisoners approach. These guys are just hammering away at their instrument which gives this EP one hell of a chaotic feel, further amplified by a muddy, reverberating sound that reminds me a bit of a live performance with a not-so-great sound system. And you know what? It works. Six Pack Witchcraft is a load of fun to listen to, and its messy sound makes you feel like you're at some show at a local bar, getting drunk with some friends.
Six Pack Witchcraft is catchy all around with old school heavy/thrash riffage that throws you back 25-30 years, when garage bands roamed turntables all over. This might be black/thrash in essence, but with track names like "Die By The Ax", "Fire in the Hole", "Go Fuck Yourself", "Six Pack Witchcraft" and "Bastards", it's obvious that this is all about having fun. Think of Motörhead, Venom, and a bit of German black thrashing madness all blended together in an underground NWOBHM-style "DIY" approach to their playing. The vocals are somewhat clean for the most part, though they occasionally get harsher and much harder to decipher (and the aforementioned muddy sound doesn't help with that.) Maybe they'd reach a wider audience with a cleaner vocal style, but that would most likely take away some of this EP's charm. I haven't heard their debut album Dawnbringer, but let's hope that they've got another album in the works. If it's anything like this, I'll be ordering it in a New York minute.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by Skullfukker Magazine
By Skullfukker Magazine
The somewhat "forgotten" band Fester has been remastered & re-released by Abyss Records as a digi pack with new cover artwork & layout.
As I listen to this one it's not hard to tell what band it is. They have not changed their style much since the the first release, technical riff based tracks is what you get here, combined with some very nice melodies. The production, vocals & melodies are much better than on the debut "Winter Of Sin" At first I found it a bit boring, but after some more listening I discovered some great melodies. They have a lot of guitar solos that reminds me of classical heavy metal ,which is quite rare for black metal albums, but musically speaking this lends more towards technical death/thrash metal, but they sure as hell manage to create a beautiful atmosphere with this album.
I also prefer the vocals on this one compared to "Winter Of Sin", it's more whispering and not as aggressive witch suits the music much better.
They have their own unique sound that differs quite much from other norwegian acts at that time.
Well worth checking out,if you haven't heard it before or want to check out some metal history.
