Let's talk about our earliest memories of what got us into metal/rock.

Alice Cooper was the first hard rock band I liked and I'd say is the reason I got into metal. My dad used to play his albums on vinyl and I remember being interested by all the weird stuff contained in the record sleeves, and the photos of the band. I also thought the music was so much cooler than typical music at the time. I inherited the records and still listen to them now.

My first exposure to "extreme" metal I'd say was probably Cradle of Filth and Cannibal Corpse. At this point, I was going through my mallcore phase (don't lie, most of us had one) and I found both of these bands just too much for me. I thought COF was scary, and I thought CC sucked. Then they started to grow on me more and more, and now I'm into lots of genres.

So tell us about what got you into metal.

I've been listening to alternative stuff since the late 60s. Amon Duul, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, rock like Cream, Zep, West Bruce and Lange, Mountain, PF, Nugent. The list is endless. Not sure what my first exposure to "extreme" metal was, things just morphed and by the late 80s I found myself listening to death metal more and more, then discovered black metal early on.

And yes, I remember Alice Cooper in the early days. Saw him when he used to wear that black jumpsuit with the zipper and the top hat. Dex Card's Wild Goose in Wheeling, IL sometime around 1970 or so is my first memory of him.

Since i assume you mean the extreme metal on the radio, i would say i bought a sampler disk from a tag sale when i was in Quebec when it was the late 90s early 2000s and it had Solarfall from Immortal on it.

The English heavy metal scene just prior to NWOBHM...Priest, Motörhead and Sabbath.

Before that there was Hawkwind's space rock, if you want to include that.
