Listening to PF since the Syd Barrett days of the late 60s this album sounds somewhat familiar. I can tell you right now, if you are one of those come lately fans that think PF didn't exist before Dark Side, then you are going to be VERY turned off by this album. It is reminiscent in a lot of ways of the transition period when PF morphed from a band to trip out to to mega superstars. The material presented here was recorded by Wright, Gilmour and Mason at the time of The Division Bell, but hearkens back to a much earlier time. If The Wall is what you are after, then don't bother with this collection of ambient fragments, most are not even whole songs and the only lead vocals of any sort are Gilmour on the the very last song (there are some audio samples thrown in here and there, but not actual vocals).

Bottom line, if you are a true PF fan and can appreciate them for what they were, artists and not mega superstars, then this album is worth a listen. If PF didn't exist for you before their mega hits, if you have never heard of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, UmmaGumma, Atom Heart Mother, More, Obscured by Clouds and the rest then don't bother, you will leave asking wtf was that.

But no, seriously, this is it for Pink Floyd..

I love Pink Floyd, but this is their swan song. I mean, look at the cover for fuck's sake, dude's sailing off into the sunset. If the band had the intention to continue making album after album, then The Endless River would contain some amount of fresh material and new direction.

Don't get me wrong... Great band, great album... but it is their last.

When PF recorded The Division Bell, they based those songs off of a bunch of demo tapes that the various band members all recorded on their own and brought back to the band with them. The music on The Endless River is the last of those demo tape-inspired songs that didn't make it onto The Division Bell.

So basically Pink Floyd is out of music, unless they want to hit the studio and start writing/recording completely new stuff and I don't think they'll ever do that.

Think I read a recent interview with Gilmour, that this is the last one. These tracks were done during The Division Bell. With Wright no more and Waters on his own, this is the end of Pink Floyd. One of the greatest bands ever! \m/

The 2 albums that I least prefer ironically are their 2 most famous ones, The Dark Side of The Moon & The Wall.

Dark Side of the Moon isn't on your list, eh. Which ones are your faves, Posty?

I like Dark Side of the Moon for sure, but as far as their whole catalog goes, their early jam stuff is much better than their later efforts like Momentary Lapse of Reason.

I like to think Floyd have done nothing worthwhile since Dark Side of the Moon.

Yeah, overall The Endless River was more like a placid lake. Nice, soothing, pleasant, sure... Special? Meh, not really. Listening to the album is much like watching the person on the cover slowly float away.

Momentary Lapse of Reason marked the beginning of the decline in their productions that they never came up from, unfortunately. Some bands are iconic for sure, but run out of inspired music and take too long to actually break up and call it quits, kinda like Phish and Opeth.

So massive hails to Pink Floyd for the awesome shit they did, and happy trails to the artists themselves. I hope they each still put out another inspired album or two during their careers.
