One day, a noble knight from the kingdom we live in decided to offer free shelter to all creatures in the world. So he opened one of his castles for public access and put on a sign that said: "You are all welcome, creatures of the world! Make yourselves comfortable and let me know if there's something you need or you don't like about the environment. I'll do my best to fulfil all of your needs. Also, for a small fee, you can get extra rations." The castle also has a huge garden and a lake, so everyone could find a suitable place to live in.
Time passed and, after a while, the castle was full of life: lions, gazelles, cats, dingos, sharks, goldfishes, bees, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, butterflies, crows, swallows, swans, squirrels, tasmanian devils, penguins, polar bears... Every species in the world had at least one representative member there.
Things were just wonderful, until one day, when the cat decided that he didn't like the flowers. So he wrote a letter to the landlord and asked him to remove the offending items from the garden, so he could rest peacefully in the sunlight. The knight considered the cat's request and refused to remove the flowers. What would have happened if flowers did not exist? Well, all bees and butterflies would have died and we don't want that to happen.
Next day, the shark decided that he didn't like the sound made by the fresh water, so he wrote a letter to the landlord, asking him to remove all the fresh water from the surroundings. The landlord considered this request, too, and he found out that all of the animals, except seawater creatures, will die if he removed the fresh water. So he also denied the shark's request.
Such removal requests kept arriving from time to time, sent by various members of the community. The knight ended up laughing at such removal requests, because he knew that they would spoil the fragile balance he created. Finally, he decided to create a public forum where all the creatures could state their wishes. So the knight and his henchmen only intervened when things seemed to get out of control among the guests of the castle.
The castle still exists, its guests occasionally fighting over some minor discomfort. But there is one question left: what if the shark would ignore the fresh water? It's not good for his health, anyway. Besides, poor shark will never know about the beauty (and taste) of the fresh water fishes.
And they lived happily ever after.
