Hej,
Myspace and such are the death of personal websites and the whole www.
I feel really sad to see so many people using myspace.

Also had a small discussion with a friend using it... I stated it sucks to have songs playing alone without you deciding if you wanna play it. He said with an account you can disable that :| This is really a stupid site.

The MySpace player can, at least, be stopped or paused, if it starts playing. Also, the automatic play can be disabled by the profile owner, so the songs can be played on demand. The really annoying sounds are those that cannot be turned off, but those are custom sounds, IIRC. Anyway, sound or no sound, I find glitter graphics way more annoying than the music. They cannot be turned off and if there are several animations on a page, they drive you nuts.

Anyway, MySpace cannot replace personal web pages, it's just a social networking tool. People who want to build a custom web page can do it any time. Just pray the page design is acceptable LOL

Hej,
But they don't do it. I checked hundreds of profiles on big sites/forums (metalstorm for example) and most of people's websites are Myspace pages.
Also myspace pages don't bring any new content on the www.

Being a social networking tool, MySpace is mostly used to gain visibility and establish communications between people with similar interests. It only asserts someone's presence and is not meant to provide detailed information on a wide range of topics. The profile provides a space where its owner can fill his *other* (external) home page, like a band home page, with special sections for news, media, downloads, biography, discography, etc.

But take me, for example. Since I'm a music fan and not a musician, what need do I have for a personal web page? I've started one some time ago, but it froze in a sketchy state because there was nothing I could share on it. I just didn't find the resources to continue working on it, so I've left it as it was: nice page template and color theme, but so little content that it's not even a whole grain of sand on a beach. Someday I'll add some content to it, but it will take some time until I do that. And it will not be dedicated to music. And I don't use that page as a more elaborate CV, as lots of other people are doing.

Anyway, the nature of web presence is different now than, say, 8 years ago. Back then, the web was littered with lots of personal pages, most of them poorly designed and full of useless text. Now the web has more structure. MySpace is not that bad, overall, and there are some nice blogs there, and other user created content. But you have to filter out the crappy content, just like everywhere else on the web. Also, spam and aggressive marketing/advertising pollute the cyberspace. Based on my personal observation of the web, I'd say that more than 50% of the overall traffic is generated by ads. Ads don't add meaning to the web, except probably for people who only see the web as $$$$$$$$$$.

Anyway, we can discuss this subject for ages. It's not as simple as it looks Wink Peace

Hej,
Oh yeah but that's the idea : if you don't have anything to say/show, just don't have a site at all, nor a myspace.
Personally I share a website with a friend, he was interested in making the site and I was interested in showing my chainmail bra - howto and some pics.
Well different people will find it interesting or not but at least chainmail bras arn't so commun on the www.

As you describe it, I just prefer forums then, at least you can read others a lot before you consider them nice or not, friends or ennemies, clever or stupid. Limiting that to only a few pics and musical tastes and some basic information is imo sick.
Any I prefer a crappy design and some rare/new content. One design will never fancy everyone anyway (and I don't like my friend's design much).

Of course people will think : oh but anyway does that hurt anyone ? Not really but seems that people tend to consider myspace pages as a must-have.

You make some good points there. The reason why I created my MySpace profile was mainly my liking of social networking tools, and not its trendiness. The ability to virtually get in touch with musicians whose music I liked and spread the word about their music. Also that's the place where I get information about upcoming gigs and other news from the bands. Instead of bookmarking and visiting hundreds of web pages, I just log in to my profile and check the bulletin board. I know that this is a bit more like a marketing approach to networking, but at least I'm not pushing that on anyone.

Of course, there are lots of people who only get their profiles because it's trendy. Or because they think they can find some easy chick out there, to get laid. Or because they are crooks and it's easier to pick up people there. Millions of reasons. Like some friend request I received from someone who wanted to teach me how to make money out of social networking (can't blame the guy just for trying, can we?). Tell me this one was a honest one, and I'll make him a statue.

You're definitely right about designs, each visitor percieves that in a unique way. Btw, I've visited your page and I found it fascinating Smile THAT particular page does exactly what it's meant to do: bring something interesting to the web. Starting from that page I've found the M.A.I.L. (Maille Artisans International League) . It's truly an amazing new world, at least for me.

To some extent, harmless web sites are just like the trees on the side of the road. They take up some space, but don't do any harm. If you stumble upon one of these useless pages, you just point your browser to some other page and get some ad-crippled useful information. You think sites containing malware, phising sites, porn sites or ad servers are better than the dummy ones just because they DO have a purpose? Heheh, probably not.

So, no, MySpace is not a must-have for the average person, but it's a nice tool for someone who loves teh Internetz. I'm a geek (and proud of being one), and I like your chain mails. But I won't give up my MySpace profile just because you don't like it. Hard to explain why I find it cool, just a matter of taste, I guess. Or sickness LOL Peace
