Dolores-area resident plans jump over Mount Everest
Article Last Updated; Wednesday, October 01, 2008
Dolores-area resident Harold Watkins will attempt to skydive over Mount Everest on Thursday with a group of fellow adventurists.
Weather permitting, 34 people will jump out of a high-altitude aircraft at 29,500 feet - 500 feet higher than the 29,035-foot summit. The skydivers will then fall through minus-50 degree temperatures before landing on the world's highest drop zone at 12,350 feet.
Most of the divers have had previous experience. A few others without much, such as Watkins, will jump attached to another person.
U.K. adventure company High & Wild has prepared for the jump for two years. Oxygen masks will be used because of the thin air. The free-fall speeds will reach up to 140 mph, so divers were prefitted with high-altitude gear.
Watkins and most of the skydivers arrived in Nepal on Sept. 22 to help acclimate to the high altitude.
No one has tried the feat, and Watkins knows it may still not happen.
"Are we crossing our fingers? You bet we are," he said.
Watkins is a law partner at the Aspey, Watkins & Diesel law firm in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he flies to work.
His partner, Louis Diesel, also will be jumping tandem. Diesel wasn't worried about the technical nature of the jump.
"Can you jump out of a chair? Then you can jump off Everest," he said. |
