Lets say you're a Death Metal band and you wanted to cover a thrash metal song, but the vocals would sound horrible if they were to imitate the vocals of the original song. Should we just death growl our way through the whole song? if so then what else could we do to make our cover special and standout? Answers Anyone??

I'm not a musician but... don't imitate the vocals! The cover doesn't have to sound exactly as the original version, but it has to be filtered through the band's perception.

I'd give Vader's cover after Thin Lizzy's "Angel of Death" as an example of an excellent cover version that does not imitate, although the original is not a thrash song.

Original:

Vader's cover version:

good point digi, death growls will be a good substitute. I suppose that any cover really needs is the same song structure, with more of todays vocal sytles, since the cover doesn't have to be entirely replicated. Just similar correct?

Yes, similar as in "play the song as it was written and not as the authors played it". Tell the world how that song looks as seen through your eyes.

they even adopted text into today´s world view.

Thin Lizzy:

[..]I was hanging out in Berlin
In the year one thousand nine hundred and thirty nine
I've seen Hitler's storm troopers
March right across the Maginot Line

I've seen two world wars
I've seen men send rockets out into space
I foresee a holocaust
An angel of death descending to destroy the human race[..]

Vader:

[..]I was hanging out in New York
In the year two thousand and one
I've seen steel birds falling down in great fire

I've seen so many wars
I've seen men send rockets out into space
I foresee a holocaust
An angel of death descending to destroy the human race [..]

but try to "respect" the original song as well, by that i mean to really do as good cover as you can, not just play the notes..

I understand. like Killswitch Engages Cover of "Holy Diver" by Dio. I thought it was horrible. don't you agree?

most cover versions suck co bad, still there are bands who know how to do it , lately I was surprised by how good sounds "4th of July" of Soundgarden played by These Are They, recommended

good point Basher, I believe a cover is all about respect, and deserves to be played with lots of "Feel" instead of sounding sloppy and effortless or plain horrible. Wink
