Anonymous started as a group of anime nerds/hackers on a site called 4chan. They abused there powers of hacking to harass people they didn't like, to find out phone numbers of girls who had nudes put up online and call them whores. Then some of them grew up and realized there is politics and messed up things going on in the world and they have started using their skills for better causes and they are anonymous because they don't leave a trace and don't identify themselves.
