I posted this on another forum, but the existential point of view is interesting here with all the folks from all over, so...

Astronomers have found a star that is 13.2 billion years old, and they say the universe is just slightly older, 13.7 billion years. OK fine, but what was there before the universe existed. The concept of nothing at all is too weird to wrap my mind around. I've often pondered this, but this latest news story got me wondering again.

i believe that is all wrong.... to think the univers is just a measly 13.7 billion years old is foolish. they have foun a star that is that old, but dont mean that the universe is. the only thing that limits light it time itself seeing a star that is that old is how it was that long ago, now the point being is that i believe that there is a unversal cluster which i basically our known universe... which mean that since ligh is finite time isnt we can see only a fraction of how big the unverse is. i believ it is wayy older and our known univers is just a small part of it. There is a cpl of speeches you shoul listen to from stephen hawking on the *b4 the univers happened * question. Its it pointless to wonder cuz we could only guess. i would keep goin on but i hate typing.

Yes
great question, simple question, impossible to answer it

I think (just like Dark) that we only see a small part of our universe. The limits of our universe move faster than the speed of light (that can be explained by the expanding of black mass (or antimatery) between the galaxies: e.g. if 2 black mass spots expand with the speed of light between us and something that is behind us, then it's impossible to see (= to receive light from) what's behind the black mass...)

besides of that, I think that our universe is just one of many. I believe in the multiverse theory. Universes are supposed to have 2 kinds of endings: regeneration by implosion (small universes) or slowly dying: they keep expanding till everything that's inside of them is dead and gets sucked up by black holes.

what's before multiverses.... impossible to know, we can only guess
I do know one thing: 'Intelligent Design' is as fake as it can be...

Yes and most of the answers thry would seek are also quite simple. Just from observation. And another thing is like zar was saying... i belive there is permanent dark spots withing the universe that absorb all light or reflect it. Just like the opposet of a nebulae. And shit i need more coffee...

beautiful topic, but too complex.. no need to kill my brain thinking about the universe, meaning of life and stuff like that.. live, die and then maybe you'll find the answer..

There are some "basic" questions that must me answered: what is the true geometry of the universe, what is the dark matter, is the universe expansion accelerated or decelerated, among others.

But I think that the main question is: What is the universe?

By now, this issues about apparent contradictions on ages are speculation and they are part of the normal scientific progress, where there are no definitive trues.

What I think about this? I think that it's absolutely cool that men have awareness of this marvelous world (our univers) and mainly that we are discussing this here!

Cool Creeper! OK!

Some further scientific view:

Warning: strange humor
Once upon a time a package of Instant Universe Powder (tm), forgotten and lonely in almost perfect nothingness, was accidently spilled and hits the only wet spot available, and it became this weird place, currently known as space.
No idea, what existed before, probably i missed it, 'cause i was drunk Wink.

After my awakening from drunkness i remember, it was me, who existed, and i took a pile of mud and created the universe, no, please, don't bow to me, was no great work, just 4 fun.

void, an chaotic unexistence of all, a state that is not and is at the same time, because the time it self is creation of cosmos and order.
