Yeah, I was surprised no one mentioned Deep Purple here yet, I actually mentioned them in another thread that CJ started. And credit must be given to Def Leppard too (Though I HATE them) when you figure that to date, Hysteria alone is around 20 million copies sold, they must be influencing someone...LOL.

I think the more primary song-type divider is pace. Basically, when we strugle on DFM queue/chat/forum,
we do it on pace of songs. Grinders/Piggers against Doomsters/Progressivers is the typical contend here.

B77 gonna right on point on citing that 2 bands.

Every-whatever influences every-whatever. It's a matter of how this influence lasts.

Black Sabbath influenced me more strongly, as a doomster. They made seminal work and put their mark on rock world.
Iron Maiden and his Heavy Metal had (and has) a strong influence on current fast-paced songs and bands.
I don't like Heavy Metal.

I use to say that Heavy Metal is music for kids and also Piggies and Grinds are. Peace
Progressive & Doom Metal is music for relics (I am one) Smile

To get down the wall, I'm with TECH222: Black Sabbath for create a genre.
It is the mentor of our current Metal Weight.

You guys completely forgot the originators of doom...Pink Floyd!. They probably have influenced doom metal more than all other bands combined. As for death metal, the aforementioned bands are right on IMO.

i dont like your atitude, mister! Mr. Green , the influences of grind are older than heavy metal, so is not kids music. everybody has a uber hate for some genres, i like all metal genres, i also like some doom, so stop this! kids music is rock or nu-metal, ALL METAL is great! OK!

I agree with the basic point Razy is trying to say. I like some of every genre pretty much, though BM is my fave, and yes leave the Nu-Metal to the kids. Hell, that shits so bad they shouldn't even be allowed to put metal in the title. Should have to call it Nu-Crockofshit or something..lol

@Razy: Err.. Hmm.. Well... You kid! Very Happy Very Happy

It's a matter of hormones, disposition, vision of life, whatever. The fact is that very few persons get old keeping a taste for very-fast paced music. Perhaps older brains are not capable of follow so much bpm's. And the same pass with the bands; mature ones tend to do more "slow" works.

So, my beloved young squirrel, the time runs for you too. Get ready to come to the Doom Side of the Force. OK!

Further, the age of a genre does not determine the age of it's audience. Peace

@CJ: I had thought Pink Floyd was above all this discussion. Rolling Eyes ... LOL

Pesa, PF sits in a room all their own, but I have to believe most doom owes heavily to them. Grin

Somebody please play these kids today some old PF. My daughters friends come over and see the 4' by 5' "Back Catalog" poster I have hanging in my studio, and they inquire as to who it is. As soon as I tell them Pink Floyd, they immediately mention The Wall, and on rarer occasions, DSotM. I immediately put on PatGoD, or another older work of PF's, and they always love it. Not taking anything away from The Wall or DSotM, but its a shame to see one of the greatest bands of all time pigeon-holed into 2 albums in the eyes of our youth. Anyway, thats just my opinion, and I agree with CJ. Doom owes alot to PF.

OK!

Another influential band no one has mentioned is Mountain, Leslie West is the grandfather of all metal guitarists.

Mountain: lovely band, but I only have 1 album from them. King Biscuit Flower Hour, a greatest hits album.

as If you started to mention some other great bands: what about Free, ZZ Top and Journey
