If you listen to this stuff for long enough, especially the grind and most of the so called "brutal" stuff you begin to come to the realization that much of it sounds alike. Sure, little differences here and there, but the grunting, riffs and drumming start to sound very much alike with a lot of bands.

But, there are those that have a sound like no other. And coincidentally, these bands very often are hard to peg into one sub-genre of metal. Two come to my mind right off the bat, Novembers Doom, no one sounds even remotely like them, and are they doom, death, death/doom, doom/death? Whatever they are they are unique.

The other one that comes to mind immediately is Agalloch. No one is even close with the sound. Are they doom, folk, folk/metal, doom/folk? Can't put them in one category either, and again, their sound is totally unique.

I'm not saying it is necessarily bands that you like, could be a band you hate but are still unique. So happens the aforementioned bands are 2 of my favorites, but whatever. What are some others?

No no no, at least half the bands listed sound very similar to others. Gotta agree with Amon Amarth, Solefald and maybe a couple others. And come on, give a little description of why they are different. Peace Grin

Solefald is different, cause they are different. They dont use common metal song structures. They mix clean with brutal vocals and they have folkish elements. but they use those differently and DO NOT SOUND like Finntroll. Hard to describe...it also is a lot about the atmosphere

Amon Amarth was the first one that came to mind, though they have already been said.

Master also came up my mind
but unfortunately a lot of bands already copied their sound.

they once started making death metal (somewhere in the mid-80s)
and up to know they still make death, they still have the same sound: old school as hell.
