Disregard my foolish post above. If the internet would be brought to us this way as in packages... this would affect gaming aswell. Not only are you paying for the subscription but you have to pay for their server youre going thru and the page youre using.
This would literally unravel the internet, it would collapse as people realize they cant do what they want. It would get boring and they would just disconnect. WoW for instance would literally loose 12 million customers. Just from that one game... what about halo 3 users? Gears of war? The companies that host this would loose millions... |

And since this was brought to attention again, I have some shocking news for everyone:
The Internet died a almost 10 years ago, because of the Y2K bug. What we see now is a big zombie who eats a new brain every day. _________________ diginferno

The internet is not going to die, "internet access" will be just another utility bill like lights and water for the next 15-20 years. After that truly FREE internet access will probably be everywhere.
You already have to pay for some parts of the internet in "packages" ... Death.fm for instance, if you want the whole experience. _________________ Death to false metal. \,,/ |

Well if you listen to Coast to Coast AM to much, you'll learn things like that the set date is not exact and may be farther down the years like 2015. But is supposedly said to be within the next decade(at least by end of world fanatics). Everyone on C2CAM is insane though.
As to the end of the internet:
We have the threat of censorship and regulation of commercial ISPs. Causing the Wild West insanity to diminish. Leading to something most likely mundane and as fucked-up as cable television.
EMP blast is always a threat. Whether intentional or not, is to easy to create. Some nukes go off, gone. Idiot screws up the design of some new power plant, and -wham!- gone. Terrorist decide to hook these up to as many power plants as they can find, and almost every post-tube electronic device in N.America is dead.
(Where would terrorist get all those massive expensive coils from? Idk, that's there problem.) _________________ I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum. |

The terrorists can also poison lakes, rivers and all kind of shit. There's nothing we can do within reason about truly "protecting" most of our daily conveniences/tools and services.
I'd rather see time, effort and money go into expanding these services, rather than building a false sense of security. I'm no hacker, but I know them and pay attention.. there is no lock that can't be broken nor any defense that can't be breached.
I'm not saying we should be defenseless. That's dumb, but a balance between protection and expansion needs to be maintained.
BTW, I have a GREAT deal on aluminum foil hats. Want any? _________________ Death to false metal. \,,/ |

I suppose if someone poisoned the water, we wouldn't have such need for internet afterwards.
But tin foil. phff. It's all about the Velostat and SilverTex.
*puts on serious science face *
Oh course, I doubt mind reading works on RF. And even if it did, I still doubt you could read anything coherent with all the electronic interference and schizophrenics out-there. _________________ I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum. |

of course internet will end 2012, becouse the world will end then.... or not, it might be that the internet shall mutate to some sort of hybrid-cloudlike-solution but i bet internet as it is will survive for several years. _________________ i am so ebil that i piss darkness |
