Define "real" death metal. To me, real death metal is early Immolation and Death, stuff like that.

Death Metal is many things now a days. But true Death Metal is Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Krisiun, Possessed, Death.

well death metal and all of the extreme metal listeners are being considered as better in hearing melodies, and they therefore needs more challenging music to their taste.
Extreme sound often seems to need brutal or extreme lyrics also often about slaughters, death, rotting, perversions, violenge and mutilations, what is in my opinion some times are unnecessary.
So to answer the question no, death metal is made to people who loves bit more challenging music
