Before the most recent thread on long songs and the Q was locked neckfreak and I were engaged in a short discussion concerning the link between music preference and personality. He thought it is BS, while I am a firm believer in the link. A bit of research has pulled up some very interesting studies on this subject, some of it long reads, but worthwhile.

http://homepage.psy.utexas.edu/homepage/faculty/gosling/reprints/jpsp03musicdimensions.pdf (A scholarly 21 page paper from the University of Texas-Austin)

http://www.signalpatterns.com/splabs_music1.html (Interesting overview on the effects on the music industry)

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2008/09/music-tastes-indicates-personality-study/ (Neckfreak, pay special attention to the 2nd paragraph Wink )

http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-6654650/Personality-and-music-can-traits.html (Another heavy duty work from the British Journal of Psychology)

There you go, anyone wanting to explore this idea, the above are a good start. Smile

So am I schizophrenic or suffer from some sort of dissociative identity, maybe some full-swing dementia?

I think this analysis of people based on the music the listen to isnt as correct as they hope. I think its bullshit. You cant just a base of personality of music. And im sure there is some people that you can but that statistic doesn't go over 25%

All of this study is a waste of time and could be spent elsewhere. Even if it were true why would anyone care how people thing based on music? There is other ways of making this analysis thats probably more efficient.

If you ask me, trying to determine certain personality treats based exclusively on a single criterion is futile. But some people have to justify the research funds they receive, don't they?

I don't see it as basing personality type on one criteria, but add this in with other things and you start to get there. This is just an indicator, but often a good one.

???
I'm so confused. Is that a cultural or language specific phrase that doesn't translate to English?

The Hargreaves book is probably enough to keep you busy for more than a weekend. LOL
