CJ,
I just read all of the articles, mentioned herein. Keep in mind, that i am not expressing personal views here - i am just reflecting on what i just read. I mean i am NOT arguing or anything like this.
Note: Let me just clarify, that when i said "WRONG" about your classification in that other thread, i meant that you can't really judge a person by specific "requests" at a highly specific community, such as this one. Just to be even more clearer on this, please, take a look here: http://www.last.fm/user/neckfreaklastfm/charts. Keep in mind, that i have not been using this service for more than 6 months in total, a few years from now. I'm pretty sure that you can't deny a bit of controversy, between my requests at DFM and my personal preferences at the time. Also much of my music is not tagged, which means that it is not included in the list, even if i have played it.
Back on the subject:
I will concentrate on the first article only, as it pretty much contains the information, that is only mentioned i the the last 3 articles.
PERSONALITY PROCESSES AND INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
First of all - VERY good systematic approach. Deep and thorough research with a few predictions and re-tests to ensure the sustainability of the eventual outcome of the tests.
The results of the research are not surprising to anyone that bothered to read it, i guess, but the greatest thing is that the foundation for a consistent research on the subject has been laid down.
This preliminary research has one serious flaw though (which is duly noted by authors, therefore not a "flaw" in the daily use of this word) - as the people, involved with social sciences are aware - these are not "exact" sciences that provide answers like mathematics of psychics, ex: "a + b = c". Here we have: If ~a (+ -) ~b (may or may not) lead to ~c.
To put it simple - this research provides tools, categories and empiric data that can provide the basis for further research. The idea is to provide "reasons for doubt and research", rather than plain answers.
To make use of empiric data, the authors have been "forced" to generalize and categorize the results, which is necessary for for the scientific approach, they have undertaken. This leaves a whole area of unexplored connections between the music and the personality - the multiple answers to test 1 and test 2 (the initial re-test). That said (mentioned by the authors as well), the links between "moods" (for example) and "general types of music" has not been discussed at all, because a similar research has to be undertaken, based on the results of this very research.
There is no definitive "answer" to the "question" about the relevance between music and behavior, but one can definitely doubt about his/hers own reasons and search for their own solution to this "problem".
Anyway, looks like i am in "geek-mode" today, sorry for the long post. Feel free to mock me as much as you like .
