86-95 Such great diverse bands came out in this time, now it's a lot harder to find groups that stray from the stereotipical metal.

I love the classics but to me Metal to me keeps getting better and better, especially sound quality. So my vote goes to the present.

The sound quality does keep getting better but i think that metal was at its prime from 86-95. Thats when you got most of your pioneersof this newer sounding metal.

Todays artists are tomorrows pioneers. I'd hate to think Metal is on a decline.

Keep in mind there was also a lot of horrible metal too in previous generations.

I'd have to say 86-95. So many great bands that influenced today's greats came from there, plus thrash, my favorite genre, was still strong. And dont forget that back then the idea of a guitar virtuoso was still the standard for guitar. Today there are some great guitarists, but nothing like back then

Mine would have to be 86-present

Why? As Helvete already pointed out the early nineties were the beginning of the (so called) first wave of black metal and in 85-86, Thrash metal reigned with early Metallica, Slayer, Kreator, etc. (I was only 1 year old then but so I've heard). In the beginning of the nineties started the now called old school death metal with Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, etc.

Starting from 96, the (so called) second wave of black metal started with some very good albums being released IMO (such as Cradle Of Filth's Dusk & Her Embrace, Dimmu's Enthrone Darkness Thriumphant, etc.) but also since 96 there have been lots of different "styles" of metal, which is also very nice...

agreeing with Midnight Grotesque here, in regards to death metal:
Old-school death metal still owns any of the new breed, hands down. Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, even back to Death and Possessed - the early nineties were a great time for death metal (and black metal, as I stated previously \m/)
