RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past..." CD review by forbidden-magazine

By Nate of the Living Dead

You kids these days…let me tell ya! Not to give those impressionable, trend-hopping minds the opportunity to slap some kind of stupid-ass label on me for saying this, but at the age of thirty-five, I’ve reached the point where I’ve seen and heard enough clueless and even disrespectful behavior at the hands of the modern day floor-punching, karate-kid-in-the-pit mob, without a doubt. I’m talking about the practically fresh-outta-the-womb set that claim with every ounce of their being that they’re legit hellraisers while never even putting forth any effort or paying any dues whatsoever, when it comes to the immense world of extreme music. Sure, you and three or four of your best buddies started a band and annoyed the shit out of your parents practicing for a week in the garage before for your first and only show…while your little sister slaved away making your band’s myspace or facebook profile oh so impressive to the poorly photoshopped “sikk and br00tal” crowd. Sure, you’ve tried unbelievably hard to sound exactly like a billion other shit bands. Sure, your band has a couple of “rad” t-shirt designs out there, chock full of bubbly, neon-as-fuck artwork with a teddy bear eating a defenseless little bunny, or some shit like that.
Your band undoubtedly tried for a whole week to get that shit up for sale at the local Hot Topic, where all the cool kids hang out. And sure, I know…you and your allegedly amazing band have probably played a handful of shows at the local Elks lodge, church picnic or decrepit all-ages venue. Your band has only played out with a few other assholes you know from school, who all have the same rockstar attitude, and their band is just as lousy as your band and you all know you‘re a dime a dozen. You think you and your swoop-haired pals are breaking out, making a big mark on the metal landscape. But, hear this ye of growing and/or oblivious minds: you don’t know shit! You haven’t seen shit! And, maybe most importantly, you haven’t done shit! You’ve all got a lot to learn about artistic integrity and keeping one’s nose to the proverbial grindstone. Bear witness to the kind of band that ripped shit apart from the ground up in the 80’s, alongside greats like Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, and Suffocation…and came back from the dead to do it all over again! Take notice of Indianapolis death/grind warlords, Radiation Sickness!
The band’s lonnng awaited new release, Reflections of a Psychotic Past (Abyss Records), is coupled here with the o.g. 1990 release, The Other Me: A Journey into Insanity. Yes, vocalist Doug Palmer (from Innndiaaanapolllliis) and cohorts have clawed their way out of the grave and administered a double dose of mind-melting crossover annihilation. It’s the kind of shit your mom should’ve warned you about, the very second your shitty metalcore band even picked up guitars. With inspiration forged from the likes of Napalm Death, Slayer and D.R.I., this collection is proof positive that Radiation Sickness have not only stuck to their guns, but can still deliver with the same lethality as they did twenty years ago. This time around, we see a simultaneous delivery of the old and new. With the newer material taking on a more old school death metal approach, at least by way of riffing and percussion (see “Demented Love Song 2”, “Tripping in the Seas of Madness”, and “Graveside View”), the older side of this collection contains a more thrash-related element here and there (such as “Disfigured Retard“ and “No Future“)…and even strays into a vibe reminiscent of Suicidal Tendencies on “Escape to Insanity”.
Filled to the brim with a sentiment rooted in the dark, real life realms of depression, hopelessness, and human mortality, this collection shows that Radiation Sickness stayed their post the first time around, and have more than what it takes to run with today’s pack with just as much sincere ferocity, if not more in some cases. What we have here is nineteen raging tracks that serve as positive proof Radiation Sickness are indeed back from the fucking dead!!

DIE HARD (Sweden) Evil Always Return / Emissaries of the Reaper DIGI CD review by www.mariosmetalmania.com

By Mario van Dooren

Late 2005 Harry (bass) formed a band with the intention of bringing the spirits of the past back to life. The goal was to play old-school thrash metal in the vein of Venom, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Exodus, Possessed, Sodom and At War. One year later, after many line-up changes, a band consisting of Harry, Hasse (guitar/vocals), Micke (guitar) and Nicke (drums) started rehearsing.
In February 2007 Die Hard entered studio Hell for the recording of their debut-demo "Emissaries of the Reaper", which later on was released as a 7" EP by Germany's Anger of Metal records. IN 2008 the band had some line up changes. After a few months of intense rehearsing the trio entered Studio Blueflame to record the MCD "Evil Always Return.
In august 2008 Die Hard signed to the Polish label AGONIA Records and released several releases on this label; "Nihilistic Vision" (2009), “Thrash Them All" (2010 and “Hatred's Black Flame" (2011).
This release is not a new one; it's a compilation of the “Emissaries of the Reaper” demo, the “Evil Always Return” EP and as a bonus some rehearsal recordings. But nevertheless a very nice album for fans of the above mentioned bands. Check this album, and all their later releases, out!!! Oldschool to the bone!!

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by www.mariosmetalmania.com

By Kees Schijven

Entrench was formed in 2005 by Fredrik (Guitar, Vocals), Hannes (Guitar) and Victor (Drums). They recorded 2 unreleased demos in this line up, and in January 2007 Joel (Bass) joined in. The first demo they did release was called 'Into Oblivion' and was recorded in May 2007. During the summer of 2008 the 'Trails of Death' demo was recorded in Studio S116 in their home town Vasteras. Then Victor left the band in autumn 2008 and new drummer Gustafsson joined the band that winter. A fifth demo was recorded in 2009 and after that they got signed by Abyss records in 2010. They started recording their debut album of which this is the result! In the meantime Hannes left the band, and also Gustafsson left. Entrench plays oldschool thrash metal at it's best, with some early Death Metal influences executed at a neckbreaking speed according to their bio. Actually that says it all, great oldschool stuff with songs like 'As Dawn Breaks' or 'Into Oblivion' they can't go wrong, except for one thing! The only bad thing about this album is the production, it also sounds as if it is produced in the early eighties. This album has a really thin sound, and with a heavier, fatter production they would have scored at least ten points higher! Certainly nothing wrong with this band or their music, I just hope their next album will have a much better (read heavier) production, so they get the sound this music deserves.

MAAX (U.S.) Unholy Rock & Roll DIGI CD review by www.mariosmetalmania.com

By Kees Schijven

MAAX started out in the summer of 2006 by founding members Kyle Kreider (guitar) and Jeff Brown (drums). MAAX have already released a debut album 'Dawnbringer' in 2009, after which original vocalist/bassplayer Sky Kingrey left the band. The band found an interested independant label in Abyss Records who released their album. Soon after that the 'Six Pack Witchcraft'EP was released in 2010. Newest addition to the band followed in the person of Jeremy Starkey (Necrophagous) on bass, while Brett switched to second guitar. In this line up the band recorded their latest, third opus and second full lenght work of art, called 'Unholy Rock & Roll'. MAAX plays a mix of old school black thrash n roll metal, A lot of Motorhead and Venom influences can be heard throughout their music, just listen to the song 'Maax' and you know what I mean, nothing wrong with that, certainly not since I am a long time fan of both mentioned bands. So originallity is not their main goal, that's for sure, but what they do, they do best, they will get every party going, they are the US equivalent of european thrashers Tankard, though with a slightly different kind of music. The devil of rock n roll has arrived, his name; MAAX, songs like 'Rot n Roll', 'Do What Thou Wilt', or 'Black Thrash Em All' tell it all. This is a very enjoyable album, not the most technical or original, but efficiently well done. To my personal favorite tracks belong 'Overthrone' (really black) , 'Black Thrash Em All' with black raspy vocals and thrashing guitars. The production could have been done a little heavier or fatter, especially where the drums are concerned, but overall it's a great, enjoyable album!

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) The Spirit of Warfare CD review by pestwebzine

By Adrian

The guys at Abyss Records seem to have a real cult for Swedish bands but who can blame them? Sweden always produced great quality bands and the ones Abyss signed up until now are pretty much cool presences in the scene. Hyperborean were formed in 2000, but this is only their debut album, so like in many other cases I think the reason for this scarce activity could be the line-up changes. The music on "The Spirit of Warfare" is quite strange, mostly mid-tempo melodic Black Metal built on old-school principles mostly, but also including a strong attempt in adding progressive touches, at least in the rythm section. The compositions are interesting and complex enough to keep your attention high all the way, but on the whole album there a feeling something's missing, there are some parts that might have worked better with an additional instrument added. It seems these guys are focused more on creating melodic and intricate passages than on the brutal and/or aggressive part of this genre.

WAN (Sweden) Wolves of the North CD review by www.queensofsteel.com

By Sergio Fernández

"Wolves in the North" has interesting sections such as "Wargoat", "Ursinnets begar" or the great "Med Stormsteg Döden Mot", making this work a more than good Black Metal album with a perfect interpretation of the instruments but not to exceed details or flourishes in many of them are almost always in vain.
The presence of a single guitar might limit the possibilities of this Swedish trio in the level of composition but good, with good production in the Regime Hammer Studio, this CD sounds good as hell. In terms of instruments, the bass for me is the element that most high quality while the guitar would sound more powerful and the battery makes no more compliant role.

In summary, this first full length WAN no doubt appeal to fans like formations DARKTHRONE, VENOM, CELTIC FROST MAYHEM or for example by returning to the past with very good songs with touches of Black Metal thrasers.

FESTER (Norway) A Celebration of Death CD review by www.norskmetal.net

By Pestifer

Fester returns here after 18 years in hibernation with bright album "A Celebration of Death."

Although the album sounds quite different from its predecessors as it sounds still attached. It is a dark, heavy and grim mixture of black and death metal in the familiar style hitches. There are basically mid-tempo with lots of cool guitar riffs and ultra grim vocals sound perfect dress. In addition, they have been joined by Audun Kleive on session drums. Audun is a fairly well recognized Norwegian jazz drummer who has little or no experience in the metal as it has done its course this sounds a bit different and original. Mortiis has also contributed a remix of the opening song, "Rites of Ceres."

Sonically they could "A Celebration of Death" as well have come out in the 90s. They have managed to keep the mood that you had to listen to black metal for 15-20 years ago and I've missed a bit in recent years. Can the highlight, "I'll Hunt You Down", "metalized" and "I spit on you" as personal favorites on the album.

All in all a thoroughly good album which I expect will get much attention in the future. Oh so we hope that it does not turn 18 until the next album comes out.

FAUST (Italy) From Glory to Infinity DIGI CD review by www.metalcrypt.com

By Sargon the Terrible

The brainchild of Aleister, former touring guitarist for Ancient, Faust released an EP wayyy back in 2001 that got some good press, and this is their debut album, released after 17 years in existence, From Glory To Infinity. I have never heard their EP, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as I know this band is considered rather technical, and does in fact feature bass legend Steve DiGiorgio as a session member.
The first thing that struck me about this was the degree of melody to be found. I was expecting something very busy and technical, which it is, but this is not as brutal as I expected, and has a lot of hooks. In places it is a little too melodic, and seems at odds with the guttural vocals and blasting drum work, as on "Golden Wine Countess". But overall the riffs are solid, and while the guitar sound is a bit restrained, that's obviously so the bass can be heard, as if you have Steve freaking DiGiorgio, you don't want to waste him. The leads are pretty damned good, though they are mixed a bit louder than I would like. Overall this is an entertaining disc of techy Death Metal, obviously influenced by the jazzy stylings of Cynic and Atheist, but not as wanky and busy as that would imply. High-speed drumming keeps the energy level up, and despite that this features many elements I am suspicious of, I enjoy this album. Worthy.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by www.axisofmetal.com

By Fritz

"Master of Hate" is an interesting album, which is split into two chapters. Both halves of the album are split by an ambient passage, marked accordingly. When you hear the opening ambience you are not ready for what is going to come next.

"Master Of Hate" then explodes into “Black Monday” and then reveals the true direction of this album, which is an incredibly interesting one. “Black Monday” has an explosively brutal intro, and then you hear the vocal style, and your left scratching your head. The vocals are a mix between more harsh death metal style vocals, not guttural; then switch to a clean epic style. This was a total curveball. At first you are taken aback by it, and not sure what to feel about it, but as you progress through the album you will then come to really enjoy them. The songs musically are brutal, with the double kicks and the heavy alternate picked riffs, and they range from mid tempo to slower and more melodic. During “Division Insane” you are even treated to a short but well written ambient type passage. This shows the diversity in this album.

"Master of Hate" is a proper musical journey. One on hand you have the death metal side of things, then you get some progressive elements, and then thrown on top of all that; you get the clean vocals. It can’t be stressed enough that this is a diverse album.

Usually albums like this can go utterly wrong, and turn out to be a complete failure; this was anything but. The guitar work was fantastic, and the riffs were well written, and even though the alternate picked riffs were used very often, they were used in bursts and never seemed to get boring or over used which was surprising.

The songs are formulaic, they start chaotic, then slow down into a alternate picked riff, then in come the vocals, and then there’s the melodic parts, and to round it all off; the monster choruses. Desultor doesn’t stray from this throughout the whole album. This formula works well for them, and again; it was surprising that such a formulaic album was such a treat to listen too.

Overall this album will not be something you like right off the bat, you will have to really sit down and digest it, but once you do; you will come to love it. What’s not to like? Well written riffs, fantastically executed vocals, and a few ambient passages to then further the spacey atmosphere this album contains. So go out and buy this album, turn it up loud, and lock your door and digest this interesting slab of extreme metal. You will come to love it.

Rating: 8.5/10

DIE HARD (Sweden) Evil Always Return / Emissaries of the Reaper DIGI CD review by www.canadianassault.com

By Patrick

Die Hard are a great Swedish band playing metal the way it should be played dirty, aggressive old-school death/thrash. Fast, raw guitar riffs, fast drumming pounding is amazing and well done. Gruff growls and blackened screeches spew out the lyrics. Die Hard are definitely fanatics of the old-school sound and I must say they play it with it a lot of aggression and passion. In an endless sea of bands who play old-school metal nowadays Die Hard are definitely at the top of the list of greats that will still be standing tall once the trend has passed and all the posers are either gone or crushed by the true metal warriors of the underground scene. Definitely a band for fans of old-school, raw aggressive death/thrash will enjoy this band and their releases.
