I think it would be pretty hard to argue with these, but if you differ, post up. I'm not going past the top 3, it starts to get murkier after that, but these 3 stand out heads above the rest.

Skepticism--The Everdarkgreen
IMO, this song stands alone, lyrically and musically. It is what funeral doom IS, the essence of funeral doom. Their first album, and still their best.

Thergothon--Who Rides the Astral Wings
The roots of funeral doom. This album has its faults, but this is essentially where it all started for what we know today as funeral doom. If you have to pick one song from this album, this is it.

Evoken--A Caress of the Void
The most consistent funeral doom band of all, and this song is Evoken at their very best. The first 12 seconds of the song set the tone, then...it is there. You have reached your final destination--HELL.

for me it's pretty much an impossible task.. too many but right away I can point 3 I totally love:

1. Evoken - Embrace the emptiness

like CJ said, one of the most consistent bands in this genre

2. The Funeral Orchestra - Gerdi Malli

ritualistic and obscure funeral doom, my fave funeral album

3. The Howling Void - The Primordial Gloom

or other song from this album, fantastic stuff

CJ's picks are totally valid and essential stuff, Thergothon, Skepticism all fantastic bands. I can also point out Esoteric, Worship, Warloghe and a ton more. CJ we could talk about this for hours. OK!

For me its extremely difficult to put just 3 songs, as I am more of an album person than individual songs. But for me, there can be 1 song and that is:

This is a subject I've actually been thinking about for several weeks. Coming up with bands and songs, listening, thinking some more, more listening...

As for Evoken, that was a tough one, which song is their best. Antithesis of Light came in a very close second, but I had to go with the one song I think of when I think of Evoken and funeral doom.

As for the Skepticism song, there was no question in my mind. I love that band, and even though Evoken is probably marginally more consistent in their quality, you can't argue that Stormcrowfleet is a seminal album in the funeral doom genre. Like I said, after deconstructing many songs The Everdarkgreen, to me, holds up better than any other.

Thanks guys.
