Amazing! Shocked Heres a link to the article:

Music Industry to Abandon Mass Suits

Here's a quote from the article, but I recommend you read the entire thing.

Quote:
After years of suing thousands of people for allegedly stealing music via the Internet, the recording industry is set to drop its legal assault as it searches for more effective ways to combat online music piracy.

The decision represents an abrupt shift of strategy for the industry, which has opened legal proceedings against about 35,000 people since 2003. Critics say the legal offensive ultimately did little to stem the tide of illegally downloaded music. And it created a public-relations disaster for the industry, whose lawsuits targeted, among others, several single mothers, a dead person and a 13-year-old girl.

The backlash was overwhelming, they FINALLY saw what was happening in public opinion.

Hey what´s Pesa doing here? Silly

Pesa i read a german equivalent article after the initial post of CJ and it says that the judicial system is overboarded and feels abused (old cheese) to bring the music industry the necessary private address behind the IPs that them can start their civil lawsuits. So there are proceedings due to it will be in the hands of the ISPs if they get informed about abuse of illegal up- / download cases to first "warn" the users via email. And than restrict services or shutdown connection to have potential effect on them.

read for example here (german):

Hm, so there had to be a global crisis to decide that they should do something else with the money that went towards the lawsuits Depressed

The PR damage is there to stay, if you ask me, now they're just "passing the dead cat" to the ISPs.

This is no good, at least as long as they kept it in public there was a way
to defend against, now they probably will do either illegal or technical
things to suppress their customers.

I thought this was hilarious!!! I heard about this and thought it was funny, not just because it was Bush, but because someone took the time to take off BOTH shoes and try to throw them at the US President!!! My big question is Where was the Secret Service?

The RIAA battling music and movie piracy is just as absurd as the American war on drugs.
