very good release

Imagine a dark dank crypt from whence funeral rotting smells emit and a dry creaking wraith lives ready to destroy humanity. In this crypt the aptly named Krypt would be playing alongside Darkthrone in the days of Under a Funeral Moon. Krypt however aren't just another Darkthrone worship, they seem to take influence from the old bands, Bathory, Celtic Frost, etc. and work to create their own sound with the old influences. That if nothing else is one thing to commend them for. Certainly one can hear some Darkthrone in here every once in a while, but Krypt's sound is very much genuinely old school.

The production is clear but still raw enough to have that classic black metal sound. The guitars are thick and heavy, but fairly dry, having that ancient sound, like they were carved out of stone and dust. The bass is audible, sometimes pretty heavy, mainly in the slower Celtic Frost sounding passages. Drums are clear, put right on in the mix to be audible but not overwhelming. The drum parts are well performed and never boring. The vocals have a great deal of reverb and create that ghostly evil element that is important in good old school black metal in my opinion.

Overall this is a quality black metal release, that is as good and interesting as anything Tsjuder released, although different, while they specialized in Immortal style cold atmospheres, Krypt is more interested in death worshiping and dark dank dungeon atmospheres resplendent with hate and corpses. Very much in keeping with the original concept of Norwegian Black Metal as crafted by Euronymous and Dead with Mayhem's artistic peak i.e., death worshiping black metal creating soundscapes sometimes with beauty, always with elements of darkness and ugliness.

Nothing groundbreaking, but very good and worth a listen or a purchase.
