Exhumed - Slaughtercult
Ultimate Goregrind Album
By: BI666SY
Date: 16 May 2019
Rating:

This album is probably my favorite goregrind album ever. Relentless grinding riffs throughout, fast-as-fuck drums, beautifully gory artwork, and I really like the mixture of vocal styles. The CD also comes as a limited edition buzz-saw shape which is pretty cool. Some classic tracks on there. Get yourself a copy if you know what's good for ya!

In Flames - Reroute To Remain
The beginning of the end for In Flames
By: BI666SY
Date: 9 May 2019
Rating:

Old In Flames was proper heavy and, IMO, pretty damn good. Then they went a bit more accessible with Colony and Clayman but I like those albums anyway as they were some of the first metal albums I got into. Then they just got more and more pop-y after that. By the time of this album, they had really gone off the boil. Don't get me wrong - there are some great riffs, cool solos, nice drums, etc. on this album. But a lot of it is whiny pop crap. Overall, it's below average at best. If you want some decent melodic death metal, stick to early In Flames.

Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness
Roots of Death metal
By: piopoland
Date: 6 Feb 2019
Rating:

As far as the classic death metal is concerned, this album is one of the cornerstones of the genre. Though the sound quality may disappoint at times, the sheer atmosphere builts up thanks to characteristic sound of guitars and atmospheric guitar solos. A must-listen for any death metal fan!

Eye Of Solitude - Canto III
Something to behold
By: estebann
Date: 28 Dec 2018
Rating:

Dense, intense, oppressive, dark, obscure, melancholic, desperate... Are some of the best adjectives to describe this monumental piece of art.

Eye of Solitude is a Funeral Doom/Death band that cements its creation through real despair and hopelessness, product of the mastermind composer and vocalist Daniel Neagoe. The atmosphere created throughout the record grabs you from the beginning and until the end. The vocals range from brutal growling, to desperate cries of genuine despair and solitude.
The unbelievable drumming is something you have to experience to believe, and the guitar work is total virtuosity, from the intense, fast riffing, to the melancholic, beautiful solos and melodies. Impecable.

Daniel is very clear and explicit when it comes to pouring out his experiences (the loss of his woman) and he delivers a heart-wrenching punch to the guts without restrain.

This is an almost unknown album by an almost unknown band. I consider it a gem of true, dark beauty.

Opeth - Deliverance
Great
By: estebann
Date: 27 Dec 2018
Rating:

Amazing album with tight production.

Opeth manages to write music that sounds very heavy despise guitars being tuned in standard E tuning. The use of tritones and the dominant phrygian scale all over the place gives the record that staple "evil" sound we all love.
The title track is a relentless classic full of riffs, heaviness and the typical acoustic passage in the middle.
The production is impecable and overall the feel is that it's a tight release with little to none flaws. A must have for any metalhead.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
The Pinacle
By: estebann
Date: 27 Dec 2018
Rating:

This is, in many ways, Opeth's greatest record ever.
The style and sound they were maturing since 1990 peaked in 2005's masterpiece Ghost Reveries.

From the classic opener Ghost of Perdition, it is perfectly clear that the aggression and heaviness we all love is at its best in here. The amount of unorthodox riffing madness that encompasses this 10:29 opus is awe-inspiring to say the least. The creativity, the sense of epicness and adventure are easily comparable to reading a great novel (also the great lyrics help). Here, Akerfeldt shows off his most brutal and demonic growls ever with such mastery and control, it even makes you think they fixed his vocals in the studio.

Then, one could pretty much think that's the best track and that they put all the meat on the grill, but then the second track, The Baying of the Hounds comes out and the second adventure begins. Another composition full of different riffs, variations, acoustic sections, it just feels endless in a good way.

Right at middle of the middle of the album we find a very quiet, melancholic track named Atonement, which serves as a great mood and pace changer. Along with Hours of Wealth and Isolation Years these represent the true highlights of the album. The natural voice, acoustic guitars, sweet, errie oniric mellotron and keyboards, it's nothing but pleasure to the ears. And after the great success of the album Damnation, these beautiful little tracks feel like a 'welcome back'.

I can't recommend this album enough for true music lovers. If you don't posses the experience nor the patience for long tracks, I whole-heartedly recommend you to start right now. You won't be disappointed.

In Mourning - Shrouded Divine
Melodic death masterpiece.
By: estebann
Date: 27 Dec 2018
Rating:

Out of Falun, Sweden comes a very original melodic death metal band that mixes doom metal goodness into their sound in a very natural and subtle way.

10 years have passed since I first heard this impressive debut and I gotta recognize making my personal playlist for an entire decade is quite a feat.
The album starts with a strong doom riff with an excellent amount of distorsion to sound both heavy and yet very clearly. Then the title track evolves into a mid-pace song that resembles melodic elements but you simply can't say you've heard it before. This is what impresses me more about the album, the original sound these men created. It grabs your attention. The guitar tone, the drums, the vocals, even the occasional bass line melody during quiet parts. The instruments are tuned to D# which gives it a natural dark flavor without being too low in frequencies.

The second track is a much faster paced one with thrash elements, letting you know this is the other spectrum of the record. It's the mix between aggression and melancholy what pieces all together.
Every single melodic line is memorable and will stick in your mind for months. There are no weak tracks in here. Look at the reviews on Metal Archives, it's almost a perfect debut album full of heart.

I'd recommend this to fans of Opeth, Insomnium, Dark Tranquililty, etc
