I'd just like to broaden that to say 3-6. So much amazing music falls in that area... One by Metallica, Black Rose Immortal and the Drapery Falls by Opeth, Metropolis and Erotomania by Dream Theater, the list goes on and on... |

It has to impress the listener more than any other track to keep the listener's attention. The industry used to generally make the "single" track 1, but I've noticed these days that Track 1 is usually just a warm-up (or an intro -- especially in black/death metal). An album has a flow about it. It's not always the same flow, but a strong song #2 is essential. |
